The United States Congress adopted the Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act of 2000 to prevent trafficking in humans and in part to further protection to immigrant women and children victimized by domestic violence. Title V of the act was designed to improve battered immigrant women's access to the immigration protections initially established by the Violence Against Women Act of 1994.
