How does the unit normal table work for negative z-scores?

What will be an ideal response?

Suppose we want to know the likelihood of obtaining a z-score of ?2-.40 and lower. In this case, the percentages are the same, but now Column C contains the chance of getting this score or lower in the distribution. This is because Column C is the percentage of scores in the "tail" of the distribution, which is the portion that does not contain the mean of the distribution. Because negative z-scores are below the mean, the "tail" part is now the part that is lower than that score. Column B, the "body" of the distribution, shows the percentage for the portion of the distribution that does contain the mean. For negative z-scores, Column B will be the percentage of scores higher than that score. Thus, you will need to pay attention to the sign (+ or ?2-) of the z-score when you decide which column of the table to use in determining the correct percentage for scores you are looking for.
