Pretend you have to teach another student how to use mapping to organize his or her ideas for writing. What would you tell him or her?

First, start with a circle in the middle of a piece of blank white paper. Put your topic inside the circle. Then create 10 or so lines coming out from the circle like spider legs. Using the 5W's and H (who?, what?, when?, where?, why?, and how?), brainstorm at least 10 questions about your topic and write each question on one of the legs. Once you have your questions, decide which one would be the best first question to answer in your writing. If that question is not there or you need to change one you already have, do so. Continue to organize the questions in the order you think the information needs to be answered. You can write the questions on the left side of a piece of summary paper leaving room between questions. When you are done, re-read your questions to make sure they make sense in the order you placed them. Then, fill in your details on the right side of the summary paper. Once all this is done, you can start writing from your organized notes!
