Marvin has trouble engaging people he doesn?t know in conversation. Once he has gotten past

the initial introduction, he?s at a loss for words. Describe for Marvin the two methods
recommended in the textbook.

What will be an ideal response?

First is the use of the great question. Get to know a person by asking questions that will
help that person open up and tell you about him or herself. It is important to listen
carefully, and word your questions based upon what their answers are. As you are
doing this, look for areas of common interests. If you do offer information of your own,
such as an opinion, draw them into the conversation by asking ?Do you agree?? Second,
is the use of giving and receiving compliments. One scholar referred to compliments as
the ?social lubricant,? meaning that compliments create a positive atmosphere, making
way for more comfortable communication. Compliments should be in good taste, of
course; do not go overboard so that you will be perceived as a flatterer, and be careful
with appearance kinds of compliments that might be taken as sexual-harassment.
