The purposes of sampling differ in quantitative and qualitative studies. Describe the different purposes of sampling in quantitative and qualitative research studies.

What will be an ideal response?

Ans: In quantitative studies, sampling is focused on drawing a sample that is similar to the population so that results of the research can be generalized to the population. However in qualitative studies, sampling is based upon characteristics that the researcher wants to see in the participants. The interest in qualitative research is presenting information on the sample and not generalizing to the population. In qualitative studies, the researcher identifies the characteristics he or she would like members of the sample to have and then creates a sample with those characteristics.
