Why do lacI-d alleles have a dominant-negative effect?

What will be an ideal response?

Ans: The repressor protein is composed of four subunits. The lacI-d mutation creates a subunit that interferes with proper assembly of the tetramer. This will cause the repressor to be inactive even when normal subunits are available.
