Briefly define the differences and similarities between a chemist and a materials scientist.

What will be an ideal response?

As defined in the chapter, chemists and material scientists investigate
the properties, composition, and structure of matter and the laws that
govern them. They develop and improve synthetic fibers, paints, adhesives,
drugs, cosmetics, electronic components, lubricants, and thousands of other
products. They develop and refine existing processes to save energy and
reduce pollution. Chemists work in production and quality control (QC) in
chemical manufacturing plants. They prepare instructions for and monitor
processes to ensure product yield. They test products to ensure they meet
industry and government standards and then report and analyze results.
Materials scientists study the structures and chemical properties of materials to
develop products and determine ways to strengthen or combine materials or develop materials for areas, such as biomedical engineering. Material science is a hot area of research, considering the advances in chemistry and biology.
More information on what these scientists do can be found at the American
Chemical Society Web site.
