What were the main points of John Money’s work on gender?
What will be an ideal response?
John Money was the first to adopt the term gender in relation to sexuality while also introducing the terms gender identity and gender role. He separated sex and gender, with sex being more biologically determined while gender is based on biology and social influences. He defined gender identity as one’s perception of his or her gender, and gender role is how it is perceived or expected by society. Therefore, we can say that gender is indicative of one’s social conformity. A majority of people experience congruence between all aspects of their sex and gender, but some don’t experience this kind of congruence and don’t conform to gender roles. Money believed that gender was somewhat malleable in early childhood and that during the critical period (first 18 months), later gender identification can be influenced.
