Please name and explain the two types of studies that have linked maltreatment to methylation and discuss the findings

What will be an ideal response?

The first type of study is the epigenome-wide association studies. This is where the genomes or genotypes of maltreated youth are compared with genomes of children who have not been maltreated. These studies have shown methylation differences in genes that were introns, or portions of DNA that do not directly code for proteins but do regulate genetic expression. The second type of study examines how maltreatment influences the extent of methylation for a particular gene. The text cites Klengal and his colleagues (2013) where they examine levels of methylation in one intron of a particular gene among adults who had been abused as children, and they found that only those adults who carried the risk allele of the gene and who were abused exhibited reduced levels of methylation on the intron.
