Identify and explain three reasons why the poor don’t necessarily use more sustainable products that are charitably given to them.
What will be an ideal response?
People are most likely to accept, adopt, and use innovations (1) when their needs are truly being met, (2) when they have made a financial investment by paying something toward the cost of the innovation, and (3) when there is a local capacity for operation, maintenance, and repair. In economic terms, people value what they are willing to pay for. Often products given to the poor don’t meet their needs or are not well suited to their cultural practices (such as solar cookstoves in some communities). In other instances, if products break or need repair, there is no one locally who has the skill to fix them.
