From Chapter 7: “Fear the College Years” (Author and adult literacy proponent, John Corcoran, speaking):
A few weeks later, on a hot August day, I left home dressed in a suit and tie, looking for all the world like a hotshot businessman, and drove to a small, inconspicuous office in the next town. I was told the sign said, “Adult Learning Center of Carlsbad.”
I didn’t hear a voice from heaven, but as I walked in the door – 48 years old, frustrated, maybe even desperate— it was the beginning of my new life and the birth of a miracle.

Although the steps to becoming a police officer vary with each jurisdiction, the criterion for selection generally includes a series of steps: First, larger police departments, as well as state police agencies, may use four kinds of written tests. Smaller departments will usually administer some form of intelligence test, as well as a psychological screening test. The next stage usually is to determine whether a candidate has the physical agility necessary to be a police officer. Third, many departments conduct oral interviews to test the candidate’s ability to evaluate and reason through several difficult situations. Some advanced testing may include an interactive training video or role playing, where the applicant is asked at different stages to provide a solution. Ethical questions
are always included in the examination. Last, departments continue to ask applicants about their previous drug use, a question that is repeated during the polygraph examination. If the use of drugs other than marijuana is found to be more than experimental in the last three to five years, applicants are likely to be eliminated.
