How did 1880's tariffs on imported goods affect the American economy?

What will be an ideal response?

Ans: Americans could no longer afford imported goods. American manufacturers raised their prices to the artificial high ones of imported goods: so Americans couldn't afford domestic goods either. Farmers were unprotected by tariffs and so couldn't afford to buy anything
