How has tolerance and acceptance of biracial couples improved? How could tolerance and acceptance be better? What factor is cited by the text as being a key to an interracial couple's happiness?
What will be an ideal response?
The student should indicate that tolerance has improved in that anti-miscegenation laws have been banned. Additionally, biracial couples are reporting more tolerance and acceptance than ever. Acceptance of mixed-race couples is more likely to be found in black families; however, blacks are among the least to be accepted by a partner's family (if the family was of another race). Other problems for biracial couples include problems with partners' parents, being ignored in restaurants, and receiving ugly stares. Interracial couples still report feelings of prejudice and discrimination from others. One key to an interracial couple's happiness is the extent to which, before their union, they were aware of how their union is perceived by others in regard to racial issues and how much social support they receive from relatives and friends.
