Self-determination involves an individual making his/her own choices; in other words, having control over one’s life and decision-making. Communication technology can support students in self-determination. Communication technology – AAC devices – allow students to express their preferences and choices. Another example can be PowerPoint, in which students can express their desire for their transition and post-school plans in an IEP meeting.
