The 2003 U. S. average for fourth-grade students exceeded the international average in both science and mathematics and eighth-grade students exceeded the international average in mathematics and achieved above the TIMSS averages for all science content areas assessed. However, the 2003 U. S. PICA average for 15-year olds in mathematics literacy and problem solving was below the OCED average and the U. S. PICA average was measurable below the OCED average for scientific literacy. Although the statistical average for 15-year old U. S. students in scientific literacy was not significantly different from 2000 to 2003, they declined in average compared to 15-year old students world-wide. Analysis of this data indicates that interest in science and mathematics for U. S. students declines as they progress through school.
