Students will note the similar family structure of male authority, and traditional
roles. Duality of home and paid work for women is familiar, but Puerto Ricans
solve some family care problems by importing more family. Language barriers are
similar, but again, Puerto Ricans may be somewhat more able in speaking English
because it is taught routinely in school. There is less emphasis in PR on educating
children for the family good. Other points that may be addressed: concern
women's relative power in families, modification of gender roles, class structure effects,
ideological positions and their usefulness in the new culture.
