Explain and discuss the process of fast-mapping and the related idea of logical extension
What will be an ideal response?
Fast-mapping involves the use of an interconnected set of categories for
vocabulary-building that speeds the development of learning new words. It is
imprecise in the sense that the new word is not necessarily accurately defined
before it is assimilated and its meaning is grouped with a category or group of words
that are used to discuss or think about a topic. The "logical extension" concept refers
to the child's having learned a specific word and then applying it to other, unnamed
objects in the same category. Logical extension is similar to generalizing from a
specific fact to a group of items. Both terms allow a terrific surge of perceptual
interrelationships between words for the child.
