Answer should indicate that the first community corrections in America was probation in the mid-1880s. John Augustus became the first probation officer when he posted bail for a man accused of drunkenness. He supervised the man for 3 weeks and then convinced the judge that the man was reformed. In the mid-1800s, Augustus supervised more than 1,800 individuals, mainly those accused of vice crimes. Over time, Augustus recruited volunteer probation officers to assist.
