Discuss statistical regression as a threat to validity.
What will be an ideal response?
Regression towards the mean is primarily associated with the selection of participants that represent extreme scores on the dependent variable. The extreme scores are present when the researcher uses a pretest and post-test design, and changes in scores are likely to regress or move toward the mean. For example, if a teacher has a class of exceptionally bright children and gives a math exam and they all score perfectly, the second time the children take the exam there is an increased likelihood that scores will regress toward the mean. This happens when lower or higher scores are achieved with participants or respondents selected for their extremities. Theoretically, an individual’s score on a math exam is based on ability and chance (Gall, et al.,1996). A low score would be a function of bad luck and ability. When the child takes a subsequent math exam on the same material, there is an increased likelihood that his or her scores will be higher. This occurs because, although a person’s scores on responses based on ability will be retained, responses due to chance will result in overall scores regressing toward the mean.
