During the Song dynasty, a new social class began and scholars were the product of an examination system designed to recruit the finest minds. Education was in the classic texts and its purpose was to produce the Confucian ideal of a cultivated person. In contrast to the professional artists, scholar-painters were not to sell their work but give it freely to one another as a token of friendship or in thanks for a favor.
