Refer to Figure 13.22. 1=Broca's area, 2=Arcuate fasciculus, 3=Wernicke's area, 4-Angular gyrus, 5=Primary Visual Cortex. Overactivation of anterior language areas, including Broca's area, coupled with a lack of activation of posterior language areas, including Wernicke's area and the angular gyrus, occurs during reading by participants with dyslexia (Hoeft et al., 2011). As shown in ? Figure 13.22, typical readers pass information from the visual cortex along the angular gyrus to Wernicke's area, with only slight activation of Broca's area. In readers with dyslexia, the posterior language areas are hardly used at all. Instead, there is a much greater activation in the anterior language areas.
