Discuss the status of gays and lesbians in the armed forces after the repealment of the "Don't ask, don't tell" policy.
What will be an ideal response?
For years, gays and lesbians had an ambiguous status with regard to service in the military; they could be refused entry and dismissed from service. Things have changed after the repealment of the "Don't ask, don't tell" policy in 2010. The "Don't Ask, Don't Tell Repeal Act of 2010" allows gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military. The law requires that the president and military leaders certify that the military was ready to implement the law, and in September 2011 they did so. Most analysts agree that the transition has gone smoothly and that much of the discrimination has ended.
