Beverley is in her postgraduate year of nursing. She works as a full-time theatre nurse and would like to conduct research in her clinical area. She has read a few articles on the topic she wishes to research. Beverley has been asked to present a short research proposal. What information should she include?

What will be an ideal response?

ANSWERS
1. Decide on the clinical area and topic she wants to investigate.
2. Discuss topic with theatre manager re practicality, feasibility, support, availability of resources and time. It is also important to establish the nurse's level of research capability and knowledge of the clinical area. When these matters are resolved, the nurse should undertake a search of the literature.
3. The nurse should search refereed journals to discover what has been published in the area.
4. Articles should be downloaded or photocopied and critically analysed in terms of sample, method, research approach, data collection methods and data analysis, limitations and results.
5. Identify gaps, inconsistencies and limitations in the articles. Attach an analysis of each research article to the article.
6. Discuss her literature search with the theatre manager and decide on a topic, design and method.
7. Write a clear description of what she plans to do, taking account of the issues discussed in point 2.
8. If the proposed research involves patients, a hospital proposal and ethics form will have to be completed for presentation to the hospital HREC. The contents of the proposal will depend upon the design and method and elaboration of ethical issues.
9. If the proposed research involves procedures (e.g. washing hands, wearing face mask appropriately), the proposal may not have to be submitted to the hospital HREC, but instead to the Nursing Division.
10. Once approval for the research has been received, the project can commence.
