Explain why chloroplasts and mitochondria both have a sac-within-a-sac structure
What will be an ideal response?
The best responses will explain the importance of the sac-within –a-sac structure. This structure allows for two spaces (lumens) for hydrogen ions (protons) to accumulate. The energy released as electrons travel down an electron transport chain is used to pump hydrogen ions (protons) into one of the lumens. These protons eventually diffuse out of the lumen (sac) through a protein channel containing ATP synthases resulting in the production of ATP. A sac-within-a-sac structure is needed to produce ATP from an electron transport chain. Both chloroplasts and mitochondria produce ATP via electron transport chains.

A seed that lands in the forest soil is homozygous mutant for the LEAFY (LFY) gene, and as a result does not produce any functional LEAFY protein. What do you predict will happen during the development of this seed?
A. It will germinate and grow vegetatively, but will never produce flowers. B. It will fail to germinate. C. It will germinate and immediately produce flowers. D. It will germinate and grow vegetatively. It will only develop flowers if it is from a species regulated by the autonomous flowering pathway.
