Explain the difference between the delegate and trustee views of political representation in a democracy.

What will be an ideal response?

Two different views on how elected representatives should act in a democracy, delegate and trustee, each argue that public opinion should have different levels of influence on policymaking. The delegate view suggests that public opinion should have almost complete influence on policy and that representatives should act fully in response to the expressed desires of their constituents. The trustee view differs; it suggests that the public's concerns and desires should influence representative actions but that because the public may not always make perfect choices, representatives should use personal judgment about which policies to implement and how to implement them.
