Describe external and internal factors, or variables, that can increase or decrease the odds that

an infant will experience developmental delay.

What will be an ideal response?

When addressing this question, there are actually 4 sets of variables that must be
considered. On the infant's side, there are internal variables that can increase or
decrease risk. For example, preterm birth increases risk; however, an easy
temperament may decrease risk in certain preterm infants. Likewise, there are
external or environmental variables that can increase or decrease risks. For example,
a preterm infant that has caregivers with mental health problems will see risk increase;
whereas, preterm infants that have good prenatal care or caring parents will see their
risk decrease.
