Social inequality has material AND ideological roots. Explain and provide an example from your readings.

What will be an ideal response?

Material factors structure our lives in unequal ways, leading to
hierarchical visions of the world, just as ideological factors allow the material
structures of inequality to develop and to persist. For example, the Western ideal
of Calvinism has material results. Calvinism promotes 'hard work' to earn ones
way into heaven, setting a person a part from others. While this is ideal, it is
simultaneously material. Hard work produces tangible results. The more work
others do to also try to attain godly status, the more work others must do. This is
a treadmill of Calvinism where materiality and ideology are inseparable.
