The nurse's cap design evolved from the traditional garb of the early deaconesses or nuns who were some of the earliest nurses to care for the sick. More recently, the cap's original use was to keep a female nurse's hair neatly in place and present a professional appearance. The rapid growth of the number of men in nursing also necessitated a unisex uniform.
