Social anxiety can create a cycle of social isolation and increased social anxiety. How can the avoidant behaviors of socially anxious people create social isolation? What types of behaviors does Claire engage in that create her loneliness?
What will be an ideal response?
Shy people are often mistaken for being unfriendly, when in fact, they also crave social interaction. For example, the case indicates that she has trouble making eye contact with her roommates and that this characteristics is interpreted at Claire not liking them, when in fact, she is afraid that they do not like her. In turn, her roommates are starting to avoid her when that is not what she wants. Similarly, Claire leaving a party early could indicate to other party-goers that she is not having a good time with them, so they might be less likely to invite her next time. Her retreat to her room to watch DVDs reinforces her social isolation through negative reinforcement. Removing herself from social situations is reinforcing so that she is less likely to be social in the future and more likely to isolate herself from others.
