Briefly discuss the three eras of policing

What will be an ideal response?


Political era: Under the political era political machines recruited and controlled the police department and the police officers working the streets. During this period the police provided social services to citizens in their neighborhood.

Reform era: The reform era is worked to break the hold politicians had on police departments and police officers. This era found conflict between reformers and ward leaders of the cities.

Community problem solving era: During the 1970s and 1980s foot patrol regained their popularity. Foot patrols reduced the fear of crime, increased citizens' satisfactions toward the police, improved police attitudes toward citizens, and improved moral and job satisfactions of the police.
