Carbon dioxide, carbonic acid, bicarbonate, and hydrogen ions are all in equilibrium unless the pH is
altered. For example, if acid is added to seawater, reactions which create these ions would shift. This
particular case would cause the ions to shift in the first reaction which produces carbonic acid. The
