Explain several strategies to help children understand that the U.S Constitution embodies the purposes, values, and principles of our democracy

What will be an ideal response?

The Constitution is the cornerstone of our government, outlining the structure of government and the rights of citizens. The Constitution was completed and read on September 17, 1787. It has been amended 17 times since then, in addition to the Bill of Rights. The three parts of the Constitution include the preamble (purpose of government), the articles (structure of government) and the amendments (changes- for a total of 27 amendments. Each state also has its own constitution, but those must comply with the U.S. Constitution. To help students understand the Constitution, carry out active learning experiences enhanced with literature or with cooperative and collaborative learning. Students should connect their classroom experiences as citizens in a democratic learning community with that of the rights and responsibilities in the larger community. It is also important to help students understand the Constitution by relating it to children’s lives.
