Pragmatics involves understanding how to use language effectively. Depending upon the situation and to whom we're speaking, we adjust our word choice and structure. For example, a child would talk with a classmate (Hey! Where's my glue?) differently than to a teacher (Mrs. Adams, I can't find my glue). We begin to show competence in pragmatics in infancy, and we continue to learn about it well into adolescence and refine it in adulthood.
