Discuss what is meant by the term overcorrection. In your response, discuss the two types of overcorrection and when using overcorrection is appropriate.

What will be an ideal response?

Ans: Student responses should include:
• With “overcorrection” the student is taught the correct behavior through an “exaggeration of experience.” Overcorrection differs from typical correction procedures in which the error or inappropriate behavior is simply corrected.
• Two forms:
o Restitutional overcorrection: The student must not only restore a disturbance he has caused in the environment, but must also improve upon it.
o Positive-practice overcorrection: The student must exhibit an exaggerated practice of the appropriate behavior. Applying overcorrection procedures requires one-to-one instruction. It can also be aversive to both students and teachers.
• Two question should be answered appropriately before selecting overcorrection as the response to misbehavior:
o Is the problem deliberate, frequent, severe, or very annoying?
o Is the procedure that needs to be corrected complex or simple? Overcorrection may be more appropriate for simple procedures.
