Why did felony probation become more popular during the 1980s and what are the advantages and disadvantages of felony probation?
What will be an ideal response?
Felony probation increased in popularity during the 1980s due to the rapid growth of serious and violent crime in the U.S. This led to serious prison overcrowding problems and felony probation was used as a way of dealing with this issue. By helping to reduce the number of incarcerated inmates, felony probation can alleviate not only some of the overcrowding in prisons but also reduce the excessive cost of incarceration. It can also be beneficial to the offender, possibly more beneficial than incarceration might have been. However, it is still risky to allow a convicted felon into the community. If the probation services are not provided competently, this could result in unfortunate consequences for society at large.
