Describe the evaluation process when evaluating a child who stutters
What will be an ideal response?
The first step in the evaluation process is observing the child interacting with his or her parents to observe, record, and calculate a number of measures. These include the frequency of occurrence of stuttering, the frequency of occurrence of different disfluency types, speaking rates, parent-child interactive behavior during conversation, parents' reactions to stuttering, child's reactions to the parent's reactions and the child's speech articulation. Next, a clinician will interview the parents and this enables the clinician to gather background information regarding the child's speech and language development, academic and social development, and the parent's perceptions of their child's behavior. The clinician will also converse with the child during play and more structured activities while recording and analyzing the child's speech and language skills. At the conclusion of the evaluation, the clinician and parents will sit down to discuss the evaluation results and also plan future management of the child's speech and language development.?
