A photoreceptor is made up of an outer segment and inner segment. The tip of the outer segment is enclosed by pigmented epithelial cells. The outer segment contains flattened membranous discs containing visual pigment molecules sensitive to photons of light. The inner segment contains the major organelles of the cell, and it synapses with a bipolar cell.
