True or False: Agriculture is one of the few industries that does not benefit from the value of ecosystem services.

Answer the following statement true (T) or false (F)

False

Clarify Question

• What is the key concept addressed by the question?
o This question addresses ecosystem services.
• What type of thinking is required?
o This question is asking you to weigh and judge evidence, or evaluate, to choose the best of the possible answers.

Gather Content

• What do you already know about ecosystem services?
o Natural ecosystems provide essential services to humans. Beyond the direct economic gains from biodiversity, humans benefit enormously from the essential services that natural ecosystems provide.
o Forests soak up carbon dioxide, maintain soil fertility, and retain water, preventing floods; estuaries provide water filtration and protect rivers and coastal shores from excessive erosion. Other ecosystem functions include the maintenance of populations of natural predators to regulate pest outbreaks and reservoirs of pollinators to pollinate crops and other plants.
o In a 2014 paper Robert Costanza and colleagues calculated the monetary value (in 2007 dollars) of ecosystems to various economies. They came to the conclusion that the world's ecosystems were worth more than $124 trillion a year, nearly twice the gross national product of the world's economies combined ($75.2 trillion in 2007 dollars).

Choose Answer

• Given what you now know, what information and/or problem-solving approach is most likely to produce the correct answer?
o We often think of agriculture as being in conflict with ecosystems.
o However, agriculture benefits from several ecosystem services: pollination, soil formation, water supplies, nutrient cycling, and erosion control.

Reflect on Process

• Did your problem-solving process lead you to the correct answer? If not, where did the process break down or lead you astray? How can you revise your approach to produce a more desirable result?
o The question required you to weigh and judge evidence, or evaluate, to choose the best of the possible answers.
o Did you recognize that agriculture benefits from ecosystem services in various ways?

Several chemical pollutants from a paper mill are released into the nearby environment. Compound A is rich in calcium and magnesium. Compound B binds tightly to all free polypeptides and proteins in the soil

Compound C is structurally similar to abscisic acid. Based on this scenario, which compound will most likely harm the surrounding vegetation, and what effect(s) will it have on the plants? A) Compound A, because these minerals will act as toxins to the plant as they are absorbed through the roots. B) Compound C, because abscisic acid inhibits the active transport of potassium ions and thus closes the stomata, which will interfere with CO2 uptake and H2O transport. C) Compound B, because it ties up free polypeptides and proteins in the soil, preventing their uptake by plants, which is critical for plant growth.

While not a hard-and-fast rule, molecules may be ranked from more immunogenic to less immunogenic. Which shows the correct ranking form more immunogenic to less immunogenic?

A) proteins > polysaccharides > lipids > haptens B) haptens > proteins > lipids > polysaccharides C) haptens > lipids > polysaccharides > proteins D) polysaccharides > lipids > proteins > haptens E) Only haptens are less immunogenic; lipids, polysaccharides, and proteins have about equal immunogenicity.
