List the types of erectile tissue present in the penis, and explain how the penis becomes erect upon
sexual stimulation. What will be an ideal response?
Concepts to Consider: There are three columns of erectile tissue-two are cavernous bodies and the
third is the spongy body. Upon stimulation, nerve impulses cause dilation of the arteries of the penis.
As blood rushes into the vessels of the erectile tissue, they swell and compress the veins that carry
blood away from the penis. The outflow of blood is slowed, and the erectile tissue becomes further
engorged with blood. The penis becomes firm and erect.
