Answers will vary, but must include gradually modifying the existing behavior in small steps toward desired behavior and reinforce successive approximations. Answers may include the following: A teacher wants to increase the amount of time the student stays on task. The student currently can only stay on task for 5 minutes while the behavior objective is 40 minutes (the entire class session). The teacher divides 40 minutes into small increments (i.e., 5 minutes) and increases one increment at a time. For example, initially the teacher sets the criterion at 5 minutes on task. If the student can stay on task for a minimum of 5 minutes, he will get a reinforcer. Once the performance is stable, the teacher will increase the criterion to 10 minutes on task. If the student stays on task for less than 10 minutes, he will not get a reinforcer. If he stays on task for 10 minutes or more, he will get a reinforcer.
