Prosocial behaviors are voluntary actions intended to benefit others. The goal of teachers, coaches, parents, and other adult supervisors is to get children to internalize the principles associated with prosocial behaviors. Then they are likely to adopt the principles for life. Four strategies include:
1. Give children reasons for showing empathy and sympathy, for perspective-taking, and concern for the feelings of others.
2. Model prosocial behaviors toward the children and in the presence of the children.
3. Present models of prosocial behaviors in movies, TV, books, and other reliable sources. Discuss the reasons for the prosocial behaviors exhibited by the characters.
4. Provide warm guidance and give children opportunities to participate in prosocial activities. Stress cooperation rather than competition in these activities.
