S.B. returns to your unit after a pyloromyotomy. Mrs. B. is concerned about when she will be able to
resume breastfeeding and what they need to do for their baby.
What postoperative teaching would you provide to them?
What will be an ideal response?
• The child might remain NPO for up to 24 hours after surgery. IV fluids will keep the patient
hydrated, and pain medications will probably be ordered to keep S.B. comfortable.
• The NG tube may remain in place temporarily but more than likely will be removed shortly after
the procedure.
• Feedings are usually initiated slowly, starting with small amounts of clear fluids such as Pedialyte.
It is not unusual for the vomiting to continue for a few days, but it should diminish over 48 to 72
hours.
• If this is tolerated, Mrs. B. can pump breast milk and it may be given as tolerated. Feeding at the
breast might not be indicated initially because limiting amounts is important and allows for a more
accurate accounting of intake.
• The nurse will be assessing the operative site for any drainage or inflammation.
