What general teaching issues will you address with R.M. concerning hypothyroidism?

What will be an ideal response?

• Maintain a well-balanced diet; follow prescribed caloric intake to promote weight loss. Avoid salty
foods because of the potential for fluid retention, heart failure, and myxedema.
• Encourage moderate exercise, but avoid overexertion. A walking program several days per week
starting at 10 to 15 min/day would be a good beginning; increase walking time by 1 to 2 min/wk
until reaching 20 to 30 min/day. Drink plenty of fluids.
• Plan frequent rest periods until the dosage is established.
• Establish regular sleep patterns (7 to 8 hours of sleep per night).
• Prevent skin breakdown with good hygiene and application of unscented lotions or creams to
replace lubrication. Even small lesions can be sources of infection.
• Prevent heat loss by layering clothing.
• Prevent or treat constipation with adequate fluid intake and high-fiber diet.
• Teach R.M. how to take her pulse accurately.
