Discuss and analyze the reasons for the demographic collapse of the indigenous population of Latin America.
When Europeans arrived, indigenous peoples lived throughout the region. As Europeans established plantations and disrupted the livelihoods of the indigenous peoples, the population plummeted by 90%. The small percentage of indigenous peoples who survived were those who were able to find some land. The map of languages – especially indigenous languages – shows where indigenous peoples have survived, in particular in the cradles of highland civilization and in extremely remote regions deep in the Amazonian Basin.
