Cranial nerves carry sensory information directly to the brain, while peripheral nerves carry information to the spinal cord, which then transmits information to the brain. Motor commands from the brain reach muscles in the face and some internal organs via cranial nerves. The remainder of the muscles in the body are connected to the brain through the spinal cord and then peripheral nerves.
