Define and explain expectancy violations theory

What will be an ideal response?

Expectancy violations theory explains why we react to people differently based on their
nonverbal communication. According to EVT, when someone enters our personal space, our
reaction is conditioned by three factors: context, relationship, and communication
characteristics. These three factors impact what we expect to occur in communication
interactions. When someone acts unexpectedly toward us, we view that violation of our
expectation either positively or negatively, which in turn changes our perception of the person.
