Compare and contrast the atmosphere and students’ behavior at the first and second bar in the study.
What will be an ideal response?
Although the women and men at the first bar also were at parties at low-and high-risk fraternities, their behavior at the bar included none of the blatant sexual or intoxi¬cated behaviors observed at some of these parties. As the evenings wore on, the number of one-on-one conversations between men and women increased and conversations shifted from small talk to topics such as war and AIDS. Conversations did not revolve around picking up another person, and most people left the bar with same-sex friends or in coed groups. The second bar was less popular with older students. Younger students, often under the legal drinking age, went there to drink, sometimes after leaving campus parties. This bar was much smaller and was usually not as crowded as the first bar. The atmosphere was more mellow and relaxed than it was at the fraternity parties. People went there to hang out and talk to each other.
