When a patent application is made, plans and detailed descriptions of the new invention or process must be filed and therefore put on the public record. This allows competitors to study aspects of a company that the company might not want disclosed, such as trade secrets and company capabilities. Competitors, after studying the filings, may sometimes be able to essentially duplicate the patented item, making changes that meet the rule of omission standards, and benefit from the patent-holding company's ideas. At the end of the patent period, whether it be 14 or 20 years, the patented item goes into the public domain, and the plans and inner workings are available for easy duplication.
