Briefly analyze a new relationship you have formed in the last year. This relationship could be a romantic relationship or a friendship
In what ways do the stages in your new relationship illustrate Knapp and Vangelisti's stages of coming together? Do you think this framework for relationships is applicable to
friendships, or is it only applicable to romantic relationships? Provide examples to illustrate your answer.
What will be an ideal response?
Knapp's stages of coming together include: (1 ) initiating (individuals meet and interact for the first time); (2 ) experimenting (finding out more information about the other person); (3 ) intensifying (an
increase in participants' commitment and involvement in the relationship); (4 ) integrating (a sense of
togetherness is formed); and (5 ) bonding (a public announcement of the commitment). Knapp's model
is applicable to all forms of relationships, although specific behaviors would obviously be different
from one relationship type to another.
