What might be the main consequences if China were to grant true autonomy to the Tibetans and other non-Han peoples? Is there any chance that Tibet might eventually gain independence? Could Taiwan possibly gain formal independence?

What will be an ideal response?

If China were to grant true autonomy to these peoples, they would most likely seek independence, thereby leading to a substantial territorial (and resource) loss for China. Currently, there is no strong likelihood that Tibet will achieve its independence, as China is facilitating the in-migration of Han peoples into the region in an attempt to retain possession and diminish any movement toward autonomy. There is a greater chance that Taiwan achieve independence—if China is able to capitalize on any proposed economic-political relationship.
